Humber Arboretum Experimental Plot #2

ACER established its second experimental biodiversity plot in the fall of 2013, also at the Humber Arboretum in Etobicoke, with the help of students from St. Joan of Arc Secondary School in Mississauga who planted, mulched and took benchmark measurements of the trees. Both yellow birch and sycamore trees were planted on the north and south sides of the plot, respectively, with a deer fence erected around the trees. The goal of this experiment is to compare the growth of these two tree species at the arboretum (located within the heat island of Toronto that is about 4 degrees Celsius warmer on average than rural Ontario) to the growth of the same tree species planted at the source nurseries in St. Williams, Dunville and Milton, Ontario, all located at different latitudes.
