Alice: Barbara and I worked with you over many years. Stu Hayward and I did many surveys of forest plots and wrote reports. It was a great experience and we all have so many happy memories. God Bless for all the great work you do Alice.

Last school year, St Augustine SS was blessed with the opportunity to implement a [P4C] tree-
planting initiative and plant the seeds for a mini urban forest on school grounds. The
results are amazing! By adding to a previous project, we have now returned a significant
portion of our open developed land back to an environmentally positive space for our staff
and students. The experience involved multiple Science classes and community leaders
working together to dig, plant, and nurture the trees and shrubs. Clever design and
placement by the lead team helps our urban forest thrive and provides for ongoing learning
opportunities for our classes. Thank you so much to ACER, Alice, Sadia and your team for
giving us the opportunity to make this eco-dream come true!

At Applewood Heights we use our mini forest in a variety of ways. Students in Green Team measure the trees for ACER. Grade 9 students measure DBH to calculate carbon sequestration as a hands on lab. Students in multiple courses remove garlic mustard plants as part of an invasive species lesson, or collect garbage from the area as a clean up activity. Science students take photographs in it as part of a photo scavenger hunt learning about ecology. And of course our local wildlife, including shrews, various bird species, bunnies, pollinators and even once a coyote use it for habitat.
